Earlier this week, Barrow Neurologic Institute officially announced the retirement of its President and CEO, Dr. Robert Spetzler, MD. The renowned surgeon will be retiring July 1, 2017 after 30 years of leadership that has shaped Barrow’s reputation as a world-class center for brain and spine care.
Dr. Spetzler will be succeeded by Dr. Michael Lawton, MD, the current vice chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California at San Francisco, where he has served as chief of vascular neurosurgery for nearly 20 years. Dr. Lawton will assume this leadership role for Barrow July 3, 2017.
The Arizona Republic paid tribute to Dr. Spetzler by sharing his many accomplishments in advancing the field of neurosurgery in an October 19 article that also describes the collective decision by search committee to appoint Dr. Lawton as the new head of Barrow.
